Investing attitude

by Mr. Freaky Frugal @ Mr. Freaky Frugal

When I was a child, I distinctly remember my Dad discussing the stock market with friends and family. He always owned a few blue-chip stocks like General Motors, Caterpillar and Ingersoll-Rand but he very rarely traded. He’d gush about his stocks, market newsletters he’d read, and his favorite TV show – Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser. He’d never miss an episode. Old Louis made the stock market seem funny with his dry sense of humor. So I grew up thinking it’s perfectly normal to own stocks and hold them for a long time. Didn’t every Dad in every family buy and discuss stocks? Not really, but I didn’t know any better. In 1985, I graduated with an MBA, got my first real job at Scott Paper Company, and had a little extra cash to put into the stock market. Plus I could kind of read corporate financial statements – being a freshly-minted MBA and all – so I figured I could be a stock market genius! I also was a total geek because I’d immersed myself in the first IBM and Compaq PCs as soon as they came out. The Compaq was “portable” even though it was the size

Fearless downsizing

by Mr. Freaky Frugal @ Mr. Freaky Frugal

“Do I really need all this stuff?” you ask yourself as you step into your garage that can no longer fit a car; search for something in your overflowing, disorganized closet; or bump into a chair in your furniture-crammed room. “Nope.” you reply and suddenly you feel a tiny tingle of fear because, hey, just the idea of downsizing seems scary-impossible. I know this fear because I’ve been there. Really. But I finally tamed the downsizing demon and I think you can too. Our downsizing experience Last year Mrs. FF and I sold our suburban home, negotiated apartment rent in downtown Philly, and moved. We downsized from 2,100 to 1,150 square feet. Our old house had many crammed, cavernous closets and an over-sized two-car garage stuffed with woodworking equipment, bikes, lawn mowers, gardening tools, ladders, and much more. The garage even had an attic full of boxes, folding tables, and other things. So downsizing our stuff was not easy. We’d been in the house for over 15 years and accumulated more crap than could possible fit into our new apartment. I hummed the theme from Mission Impossible whenever I looked around at all the stuff we needed to part with.

Unless, of course, you don’t watch any TV entertainment in which case I bow down to your greatness and discipline. What we had We had Verizon Fios TV with the Extreme HD TV package and Internet with 100 Mbps up and down. The Extreme HD TV package is one level below the top Ultimate HD TV package, but even so it had over 320 channels including 90 HD channels. I think we watched about 10 out of the 320 channels. Crazy right? If you think that’s crazy, check out our monthly bill for over $186: That’s works out to over $2,230 per year. Not very Freaky Frugal! Well, I Opened My First Store Credit Card

I’ve never really understood why someone would open a credit card that can only be used at a specific store. How useless! And even if the store rewards were that good, I would rather be earning 1.5x Chase points using my Chase Freedom Unlimited. Given this mindset, it’s easy to say I surprised myself a few…

Goals (and Resolutions) can ruin your life!

by Mr. Freaky Frugal @ Mr. Freaky Frugal

Happy New Year! Well, since it’s a new year maybe you’re thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. You may have Resolutions about health, wealth, relationships, stuff, whatever. Of course, a Resolution is just another form of a goal and you may well create other goals throughout the year. There’s no question that goals are important. They’re the engine that powers the progress of the world. They’re what pushes you from point A to point B even when doing so is painfully difficult. They focus you, force you to plan, drive progress, and can change your life when they’re achieved. Goals are great and everybody loves ‘em, right? I mean goals are almost as sanctified as baseball, motherhood, and apple pie. Enter any corporate headquarters or sports team locker room and you’ll likely hear or see memorable quotes about goals like… Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination. — Fitzhugh Dodson Goals are dreams with deadlines. ― Diana Scharf If you’re bored with life — you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things — you don’t have enough goals. — Lou Holtz Many people fail

The stages of FIREing

by Mr. Freaky Frugal @ Mr. Freaky Frugal

I became Financially Independent and Retired Early (FIRE) in 2012. I can’t believe it’s already been more than 5 years since I FIREd – time does indeed fly when you’re having fun! When I reflect on my own FIRE launch, I realize that I rocketed through many stages  breaking free from the gravity of Wage Slavery and finally entering the float-like freedom of FIRE. If you’re FIRE-aspiring, you’ll also blast through stages to achieve your own FIRE mission objective. Of course, I can’t guarantee your stages will be exactly like mine, but I’ll bet they’ll be similar with minor course corrections. 🙂 Anyway, I’ve identified seven distinct stages, so hold onto your seat because here we go. Stage 1: Discovering FIRE exists The first stage is when you realize that FIRE exists and you want to chase after it. The good news is that since you’re reading this, you’ve already passed through this stage. Congrats! You’re way ahead of most people because most never even discover FIRE. It’s just too unconventional and requires too much outside-the-box thinking. Our experience Mrs. FF and I have always been fairly Freaky Frugal but I never thought about retiring early because it seemed impossible. At

My kinda bikeshare job

by Mr. Freaky Frugal @ Mr. Freaky Frugal

After we downsized and moved to an apartment in downtown Philly, Mrs. FF and I had little room to store bikes. She has her cheapo bike locked outside in our covered parking space, but there’s no room for another bike for me. So I decided to try Philly’s bike share – Indego. It costs $144 a year for unlimited rides for up to 1 hour per ride. I love it! The engineer in me likes the idea of bike sharing because it’s a more efficient way to use bikes. Why does everyone need their own commuter bike when we can all share? I also never have to deal with maintenance or worry about locking the bike because I always dock it at a station. It comes with an easy-to-use key fob so I can walk up to a station, adjust a bike, check it out, and start riding in about 15 seconds. And there’s a bike station less than 100 yards from our apartment! On a typical day, I pull a bike from my home station, ride to the Central Library for free books, and quickly check the bike back in. Then I can go to the library, leave, wander around

Bank bonus bonanza! | Mr. Freaky Frugal

Mr. Freaky Frugal

Have you ever gotten a bank bonus? You know - the ones where you open an account, jump through hoops, and then the bank eventually deposits a cash bonus into your account. Over the years I've taken advantage of a few bonuses when I received good offers. I'd get a snail mail from a bank, open an account and make $150 to $200. It was nice when it happened. One day I had the genius idea of looking for bank bonuses on the interweb. I've no idea why I didn't think of this sooner. Maybe I'm a little slow. Anyway I discovered a great site and community for bank bonuses - DoctorOfCredit. Little did I know that people are making thousands of dollars from bonuses. Someone claimed to have made $8,000 in a single year! Sign me up, right? The DoctorOfCredit keeps a current list of the best bank bonuses. The site has other helpful information about bank bonuses which is definitely worth exploring. Check it out. Really Stupid Comic #6 Important to know In the meantime, here's a summary of the most

A formula for finding the right career

Sam at Financial Samurai, one of my favorite blogs, wrote a post called How Much Are You Willing To Sacrifice To Change Your Career? This excellent post prodded me to reexamine my own career choice and the mountain-sized impact it had on my net worth. My chosen career is a major reason I was able to FIRE as early as I did. So I’m living proof that if you want to FIRE, picking the right career is important. Picking the right career is important for another reason – it impacts your health and well-being. There’s nothing more stressful and unhealthy than a job you hate, suck at, and pays like crap. Nobody plans on becoming a crabby Wage Slave but it happens all the time. Conversely, if you find the right career, there are many times when working feels more like fun rather than work. And you can’t believe you actually get paid to have fun! At least that was my experience. I waded through a boatload of career sludge before I stumbled upon the right career. Then it took me more time to process what I learned into a general career-picking formula. After that, I taught the formula to my sons as they entered high

Obamacare madness

by Mr. Freaky Frugal @ Mr. Freaky Frugal

I had my first real girlfriend in High School. That relationship lasted about a year and a half and was an emotional roller coaster of love, hate, breakups and makeups. It felt like madness. My relationship with Obamacare has lasted even longer, but it feels like the same love-hate-madness relationship that I had in High School. Let me explain. Obamacare beats Private Insurance When I was first contemplating leaving my Wage Slave job and FIREing, I loved the promise of Obamacare. There’s no way I would’ve considered FIREing in 2012 if I didn’t know Obamacare was coming in 2014. You may remember that before Obamacare, you had to get health insurance through an employer, Medicaid, Medicare, or a private health insurance policy. But private policies sucked because they could be denied for pre-existing conditions. Make sense, right? Why would sick people want health insurance anyway? 😡 So when I FIREd in 2012, my only option was to buy a crappy private policy directly from an insurance company. Every member of my family had to get a physical just to apply. It was a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that cost $4,360 in 2013. But I knew Obamacare was coming and I
